Pieces of the Puzzle

Open source changes everything — well, almost. No longer are companies locked into restrictive agreements. No longer are they limited by development cycles of traditional software. No longer must they rely on bug or security fixes based on the schedule. No longer are they financially penalized by rigid licensing costs.

In fact, there’s only one small problem: the risk picture of doing open source. And making it work. On schedule. And on a budget.

The Missing Puzzle Piece

For all it’s obvious benefits — and mainstream users — open source is risky because the open source solutions are like pieces of a puzzle that no one has assembled into an end-to-end “stack.” Nor has anyone created an open source stack optimized for secure operations built to deliver planned profitable growth — as opposed to continual worry about the continuity, integrity and security of their operations. In this sense, open source holds the potential to offer far more: the backbone of a truly secure business environment able to deliver unprecedented efficiency, scalability, reliability and security.

How? Through improved visibility.

Unisys has provided valuable consultation to the Navy’s Aviation Data Management And Control System (ADMACS) program being developed at NAVAIR Lakehurst located in Lakehurst, NJ at their Aircraft Platform Integration(API) Laboratory.

The consultation focused on the Reliability, Availability, and Scalability (RAS) of the ADMACS, which supports the real-time operations of an aircraft carrier.

ADMACS offers a real-time, fault tolerant (redundant), configuration managed, tactical data management system with open system architecture based on Windows Server 2003, RedHat Enterprise Linux, MySQL Cluster, JBoss Application Server, and JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite components.

Unisys expertise across the entire open source stack allowed NAVAIR to quickly and holistically review their production application and server configuration for both clustering and failover.

Using our 3D Blueprinting
methodology, we combine
domain expertise with technical
scenario modeling tools to create
a rich, three-dimensional
representation of the costs and
impacts of IT and business
decisions at all levels of your
organization. Hardware and
software. Processes and people.
Your organization is more secure
because you can see its inner
workings — especially the likely
impacts of potential decisions.
Not only does this model offer a unique view into every layer of the computing stack, it also shows the business processes and strategies served by each layer and element of the stack. The overall result:  secure business operations with the visibility to see, understand and act — and thus secure.

The Open Source Solutions Business Benefits

  • Reducing IT Costs: We help our clients reduce the cost of IT by migrating from more costly operating systems, applications, middleware and databases to an open source alternative.  We also help clients consolidate existing resources by introducing servers optimized for open source operating systems, databases, and so forth. And, we give them the power to scale performance to meet fluctuating business demands.
  • Speeding implementation: Open source enables speedy application development and deployment.  Unisys helps clients capitalize on that benefit not only by creating infrastructures that can run the software but also by quickly developing our own applications and middleware to address pressing business issues. For example, we’ve created Web components that stop hackers from infiltrating valuable database, as well as modules that improve specific industry operations such as passenger processing and phone messaging.
  • Offering Freedom of Choice: The benefits of open technologies such as open source really boil down to one key advantage: freedom of choice.  When you have options, you are not locked into any one vendor’s products or services. That moves control from the vendor to the client.  Unisys is the only service provider with the credentials to be an open source partner and no proprietary components of the stack to protect.  We are completely solution agnostic and offer choices at every layer based on each of our client’s current investments and future goals.

Today, Unisys is solving the open source risk puzzle. Drawing on years of engineering mission-critical systems for open platforms, we offer an open source strategy that delivers unprecedented cost savings, speed, control and security.

“Unisys intelligent infrastructure solutions have allowed us to adapt easily and quickly to market changes.” Kevin Wright, MedScheme’s CIO.
