Benchmarks SAP Business Warehouse

Unisys ES7000 servers are #1 in SAP BW

The numbers achieved for the 3-step benchmark were:

  • Step 1 Load Phase - average throughput:  66,918,119 rows per hour
  • Step 2 Load Phase - average throughput:  13,874,251 rows per hour
  • Step 3 Query Phase - throughput/hour: 154,656 query navigation steps

The Step 1 Load Phase deals with loading data into Infocubes, creating Indexes, and aggregating information – one of the time consuming and key steps in building an information warehouse.

The Step 2 Load Phase deals with loading data into the operational store and data structures.  Steps 1 and 2 both deal with the loading of data and are key parts of building a data warehouse. Each has different views of the data and different manipulation.

The Step 3 Query Phase deals with queries against either of the data stores in Step 1 or 2.  This is the most important part of a Business Warehouse—the ability to do reporting of information in a timely fashion.

Benchmark at-a-glance

The SAP Business Information Warehouse 3.1 Standard Application Benchmark Suite was performed by Unisys at their SAP Engineering Competency Center in Mission Viejo, California on May 5, 2004. The initial preparation for the benchmark began at the Unisys SAP Field Competency Center at SAP AG's headquarters campus in Waldorf, Germany (Unisys also has SAP Competency Centers in Reston, Virginia and Tokyo, Japan).

The record-breaking performance was achieved on a Unisys ES7000/430 Server configured with 16 Intel® Itanium® 2 64-bit processors. Processor speed was 1.5GHz. The configuration also included 16 GBs of main memory. The operating system used was Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition (64-bit) and the database software was Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (64-bit).
