Unisys Helps Abbey Reduce Cost of Computing

Abbey to benefit from a scalable Unisys ClearPath environment, offering increased flexibility to meet business demands

London, March 9, 2005 – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that it has successfully implemented a ClearPath Plus mainframe environment for Abbey, one of the UK's largest personal financial services companies. Abbey customers are set to benefit from the company's increased focus on IT. The ClearPath Plus environment is designed to help Abbey realize key elements of its IT strategy – significantly reducing computing costs and increasing the flexibility and service reliability to Abbey's customers and business units.

Unisys helped Abbey consolidate existing banking applications into two new ClearPath Plus Dorado 180 mainframes. One mainframe supports Abbey's primary data center and the other handles development, testing and disaster recovery.

Unisys has supported Abbey's core retail banking applications and served as a strategic IT partner for more than thirty-five years. Every day, approximately two million real-time transactions are currently received and processed from Abbey's branches, contact centers and ATMs. In addition, there are a number of overnight, off-line financial processes that post transactions, with one key banking process making five million transactions in 2.5 hours.

"A key IT challenge for Abbey is to reduce costs while maintaining high levels of service quality. As one of the largest banks in the UK, it is continuing to grow its customer base and needs a secure, stable and resilient infrastructure capable of handling large numbers of transactions – from an average of 50 transactions per second to a peak of 130 transactions per second," said Alwyn Welch, vice president and general manager, Unisys UK. "The ClearPath Plus technology has enabled Abbey to consolidate a number of operating system images into a single machine, which also enables a significant reduction in support and maintenance costs."

"Unisys proven expertise, technology and services have cemented our long-term partnership," said Anne Weatherston, director of IT Infrastructure, Abbey. "The new infrastructure has delivered savings from day one, and enables us to provide a more flexible service to the business and our customers. This will help differentiate Abbey in a challenging and consolidating marketplace."

The main applications that run on the Unisys ClearPath systems are:

  • Savings – approximately ten million savings accounts
  • Banking – approximately 3.4 million current accounts
  • Card Management – manages eight million cards issued and also carries out processing for Internet bank 'cahoot' and Abbey Business
  • Mortgage applications.
